Mobile DJ (General Events)

Performing at general events such as birthday and anniversary parties along with corporate events (including the holiday season) is the best way to break into the DJ industry.  You will find that these clients may have a lower expectation and will be more tolerant of your level of expertise.  Early in my career, I let my customers know that although I was new to the industry, I could offer them an attractive price that would fit into their budget.  Of course, I under promised and over delivered.  Many times I heard comments about how everyone enjoyed the music along with how affordable I was.  It’s what you might have to do to get started.  Now in the same token, you cannot get wedding gigs if you have not paid your dues.  Imagine talking to a future bride and saying. “I am just starting out, but I’ll give you a good price”.  That won’t work unless the bride thinks that a DJ does not offer any value to her event.

General parties and events are easier to perform and easier to obtain.  It’s generally a more relaxed atmosphere where you can dress casual and be a little more interactive with the guests.

Your income level certainly depends on how many of these events you book.  I have seen DJ’s perform 3-4 general events every weekend along with a few bars/clubs during the week.

We are currently creating a complete “how-to” guide to becoming a DJ.  This will be a step-by-step program laying out procedures such as how to set-up your business,  equipment information, build your website, how much you should charge, where to buy music, customer expectations and marketing.  You will be able to follow the plan laid out by industry experts that will help to educate you about this lucrative market.  Simply provide your email address in the box to the right, and we’ll keep you “in-the-loop”.  Plus, receive industry related news, articles and special promotions to help you to be in-the-know.
